چکیده

An obstacle representation of a graph is a mapping of the vertices onto points in the plane and a set of connected regions of the plane (called obstacles) such that the straight-line segment connecting the points corresponding to two vertices does not intersect any obstacles if and only if the vertices are adjacent in the graph. The obstacle representation and its plane variant (in which the resulting representation is a plane straight-line embedding of the graph) have been extensively studied with the main objective of minimizing the number of obstacles. Recently, Biedl and Mehrabi [5] studied grid obstacle representations of graphs in which the vertices of the graph are mapped onto the points in the plane while the straight-line segments representing the adjacency between the vertices is replaced by the L1 (Manhattan) shortest paths in the plane that avoid obstacles. In this paper, we introduce the notion of geodesic obstacle representations of graphs with the main goal of providing a generalized model, which comes naturally when viewing line segments as shortest paths in the Euclidean plane. To this end, we extend the definition of obstacle representation by allowing some obstacles-avoiding shortest path between the corresponding points in the underlying metric space whenever the vertices are adjacent in the graph. We consider both general and plane variants of geodesic obstacle representations (in a similar sense to obstacle representations) under any polyhedral distance function in R as well as shortest path distances in graphs. Our results generalize and unify the notions of obstacle representations, plane obstacle representations and grid obstacle representations, leading to a number of questions on such embeddings.

Two-geodesic transitive graphs of prime power order

In a non-complete graph $Gamma$, a vertex triple $(u,v,w)$ with $v$ adjacent to both $u$ and $w$ is called a $2$-geodesic if $uneq w$ and $u,w$ are not adjacent. The graph $Gamma$ is said to be   $2$-geodesic transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on arcs, and also on 2-geodesics. We first produce a reduction theorem for the family of $2$-geodesic transitive graphs of prime power or...

Geodesic Distance in Planar Graphs: An Integrable Approach

We discuss the enumeration of planar graphs using bijections with suitably decorated trees, which allow for keeping track of the geodesic distances between faces of the graph. The corresponding generating functions obey non-linear recursion relations on the geodesic distance. These are solved by use of stationary multi-soliton tau-functions of suitable reductions of the KP hierarchy. We obtain ...

Geodesic Convexity and Cartesian Products in Graphs

In this work we investigate the behavior of various geodesic convexity parameters with respect to the Cartesian product operation for graphs. First, we show that the convex sets arising from geodesic convexity in a Cartesian product of graphs are exactly the same as the convex sets arising from the usual binary operation ⊕ for making a convexity space out of the Cartesian product of any two con...

Graphs with Plane Outside-Obstacle Representations

An obstacle representation of a graph consists of a set of polygonal obstacles and a distinct point for each vertex such that two points see each other if and only if the corresponding vertices are adjacent. Obstacle representations are a recent generalization of classical polygon–vertex visibility graphs, for which the characterization and recognition problems are long-standing open questions....

Obstructing Visibilities with One Obstacle

Obstacle representations of graphs have been investigated quite intensely over the last few years. We focus on graphs that can be represented by a single obstacle. Given a (topologically open) polygon C and a finite set P of points in general position in the complement of C, the visibility graph GC(P ) has a vertex for each point in P and an edge pq for any two points p and q in P that can see ...
